Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions about fabric, ordering, or visiting our store? Here are the answers to the most common questions we get from designers, sewists, and brands.
Fabrics & Materials
What types of fabric does KBM Fabrics sell?
We carry a wide range of knit and woven fabrics including lyocell (Tencel), linen, cotton, denim, selvedge denim, jersey knit, French terry, fleece, rayon, silk, and more. Many of our knit fabrics are spun in-house at our Los Angeles facility.
What is the most breathable fabric for summer dresses?
Linen and lyocell (Tencel) are among the most breathable fabrics for summer. Both wick moisture away from the body and allow air to circulate, keeping you cool even on the hottest days. Lightweight jersey knit is another excellent breathable option.
What is the best sustainable fabric for clothing?
Lyocell (Tencel) is widely considered one of the most sustainable fabrics available. It's made from responsibly harvested wood pulp in a closed-loop process that recycles water and solvents. Organic linen and organic cotton are also strong sustainable choices.
What fabric is best for a flowy summer dress?
For maximum flow and drape, look at lyocell, rayon challis, or lightweight jersey knit. These fabrics move beautifully and create that effortless, breezy silhouette.
What momme silk is best for dresses?
For most dresses, 14-19 momme is the sweet spot. Crepe de chine (14-16 momme) works beautifully for flowing dresses, while charmeuse (16-19 momme) is ideal for slip dresses and more structured silhouettes.
What is the difference between silk charmeuse and silk satin?
Charmeuse is a specific type of satin weave made from silk. "Silk satin" is a broader term that can refer to any satin-weave silk. Charmeuse specifically has a glossy face and matte back, with a characteristic fluid drape.
Is higher momme silk always better?
Not necessarily — it depends on your project. Higher momme means heavier, more durable, and more opaque. A 6-momme chiffon is perfect for overlays, while a 25-momme charmeuse is perfect for bedding. The "best" momme weight is the one that matches what you're making.
How do I sew with silk without it slipping?
Use sharp microtex or silk needles, pin within the seam allowance, consider using tissue paper or a stabilizer underneath while sewing, and use a shorter stitch length (2.0mm). French seams are ideal for silk because they enclose raw edges beautifully.
Do you carry selvedge denim?
Yes! Selvedge denim is one of our most popular fabrics. Selvedge (or "self-edge") denim has a clean, finished edge created on traditional shuttle looms, which prevents fraying and adds a premium quality to any garment.
